24 Dates in 2024- Date #3

We lit it up for Date #3 of our 24 dates in 2024.

We went deep-south Jersey to regions we had never been to before. Passing some place called Pedricktown, and in the darkness, it felt a bit eerie and lost. I asked Ken if he knew where we were, and he quipped, “We are 7 minutes away from where we need to be.”

He didn’t know!

We eventually made it to Jersey Poured Candles for our candle-making lesson and met the dynamic and bubbly Master Candle Maker, Lulu. We learned master candle makers are called a Chandler- not to be mistaken for a Chandelier.

Love learning something new.

Ken picked this particular candle-making location because the reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and the lesson included various options for your workshop.

We could choose our candle vessel, our candle fragrance, and a variety of apothecary add-ons that made the experience more creative and gave each candle a unique look from its maker.

*We did candle-making years ago, but this experience was better.

Ken lingered over the wall of fragrances, shunning the Snickers and Reece scents. He couldn’t quite remember what he concocted but remembered the apothecary add-ons of fig and lavender.

I chose Vanilla Bean and Gingerbread straight out of the gate. A girl knows what she likes to smell!

Ken’s olfactory sense might be off. It is wild how the average person takes a primary survival sense for granted. Scents have such a solid correlation to memory.

Take the young boy in front of me, making a cereal bowl candle.

Yep- that’s a thing. Ask Lulu.

I was transported back to my childhood yellow-striped couch, watching Saturday morning cartoons and eating fruit loops when he poured his scent into his hot wax.

In hindsight, the fragrances we chose somewhat mirror our personalities. Ken is clean and crisp, and I am warm and cozy.

Not to say Ken’s not warm or I’m not clean!

Chandler, Lulu mingled among the group, engaging with each person approving their selections, and keeping us safe by teaching us the “hot wax” chant, snapping photos along the way.

Who knew chilling in a room filled with strangers at a sip-and-scent lounge would be so enjoyable.

An unexpected surprise with venturing out for these 24 dates is the people we meet and get to know.

From a ninja to a Chandler, it’s been a privilege to learn about people’s passions and enjoy their joy in what they do.

Did we have fun with our Jersey Poured Candles experience? Yes, we did! Would we go back? Even though it was a trek for us, I will say yes because it was worth the drive!

Off to light up the house with some warm vanilla glow.
